Zohran Mamdani Praises Uzbek Nurses and Immigrant Workers

Speaking to supporters after his election victory, newly elected New York mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed particular gratitude to Uzbek nurses for their role in helping mobilise voters.
He also acknowledged several other minority communities across the city, including Mexican grandmothers, Yemeni corner shop owners and Senegalese taxi drivers.
«Thank you to those so often forgotten by the politics of our city who made this movement their own. I speak of Yemeni bodega owners and Mexican abuelas, Senegalese taxi drivers and Uzbek nurses, Trinidadian line cooks and Ethiopian aunties, yes aunties,» he told the crowd.
«To every New Yorker in Kensington and Midwood and Hunts Point, know this city is your city, and this democracy is yours too,» he added.
Mamdani has pledged to introduce free childcare for children aged six weeks to five years and to establish state-subsidised grocery shops in every district of the city.
Other proposals include free city buses and a freeze on rent for around one million tenants.
To pay for these initiatives, Mamdani has proposed higher taxes for the city’s wealthiest residents and an increased corporate tax rate. Critics argue that such measures are unrealistic and could place pressure on the city’s finances.
