Newcastle United’s chief commercial officer Peter Silverstone has been placed on immediate gardening leave, with reports suggesting he is set to take up a business role at Juventus later this year. Silverstone, who spent three years at St James’ Park after a previous spell with Arsenal, is departing on good terms.
His exit comes as new chief executive David Hopkinson conducts a 100-day review of the club’s operations. Hopkinson, who joined from Real Madrid, has promised significant changes where he sees fit, reportedly adopting the mantra:
«You’re either with us, or with yourself.»
Sources indicate that another senior staff member left last month and further departures may follow as part of Hopkinson’s audit. During his time at Newcastle, Silverstone played a key role in securing the club’s Adidas kit deal, worth £30 mln per season. He also contributed to 130% revenue growth, though he faced mixed opinions among fans, particularly over ticketing issues.
Hopkinson aims to boost the club’s commercial revenue by close to £100 mln per season. Partnerships with Visa have been announced, with potential deals involving Microsoft and Amazon on the horizon. His global contacts and experience are expected to be instrumental in achieving that growth, allowing manager Eddie Howe greater investment in the playing squad.
Insiders suggested Silverstone’s departure was anticipated following Hopkinson’s appointment. Silverstone reportedly addressed his commercial team after the news was shared via staff email, reiterating his respect for the club, its supporters, and the city where his family has settled.
