Ukraine Peace Talks: Trump Pushes for Agreement, Zelenskyy Hesitant

President Donald Trump has clarified that his administration’s 28-point peace proposal for Ukraine and Russia is «not my final offer.» Speaking to reporters, he stressed the urgency of ending the war, adding that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejects the plan, «then he can continue to fight his little heart out.»

The proposal has sparked controversy. It suggests allowing Russia to keep more Ukrainian territory, limits the size of Ukraine’s military, and bars the country from joining NATO. Ukrainian lawmakers and some U.S. senators have criticized the plan, arguing it concedes too much to Russia and could leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks.

Despite the criticism, the plan includes security guarantees from the U.S. and European allies, though details remain limited. European leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and other countries have expressed concern that the plan could undermine Ukraine’s long-term security.

U.S. officials are working to advance discussions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff are set to meet a Ukrainian delegation in Geneva, with a separate meeting with Russian representatives under consideration. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and top diplomats have also engaged with Ukrainian officials in Kyiv to push negotiations forward.

Trump has made ending the Ukraine war a central pledge of his 2024 campaign. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the plan, warning that failure to agree would lead to further military action, Zelenskyy remains cautious, emphasizing that consultations with European allies continue.
