Sir Elton John has spoken publicly about major vision loss, calling the past 15 months «devastating» after an infection in 2024 left him blind in his right eye and with limited sight in his left. The music icon said he has been unable to watch or read anything, though recent treatments have brought slight improvement.
Elton credited friends and technology for helping him stay connected during the ordeal. Using his iPad to see faces up close, he has remained in touch with fellow musicians including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend, who he says check in on him regularly
. «The love I’ve received has been amasing,» he shared.
His husband, David Furnish, said doctors have seen some progress in Elton’s left eye and expressed optimism about emerging treatments, including advances in artificial intelligence that could one day help repair retinal damage.
Despite his vision challenges, Elton continues to perform. He made appearances at the Singapore Grand Prix and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and has announced plans to take the stage at Rock in Rio next year.
