Eva Green has joined the cast of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday, taking on the role of Aunt Ophelia in Season 3. The character was teased in the closing moments of the Season 2 finale, which showed only the back of her head and prompted widespread fan speculation. Green’s casting confirms that Aunt Ophelia is not connected to Lady Gaga’s character Rosalyn Rottwood, as some viewers theorised.
Ophelia Frump is the sister of Morticia Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. According to the show’s mythology, she was institutionalised at Willow Hill by the sisters’ mother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), before escaping. In the Season 2 finale, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) reads Ophelia’s journal and has a vision of a blond woman in a flower crown. The image turns sinister when Ophelia is shown imprisoned in Hester’s mansion, dressed in red and scrawling «Wednesday must die» on the wall in blood.
«I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia,» Green said in a statement, adding that she looks forward to bringing her own «cuckoo-ness» to the Addams family.
Wednesday remains one of Netflix’s most-watched series, with its first season topping the streamer’s global TV chart. The cast also includes Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán and Fred Armisen.
