Uzbekistan revised its gross domestic product after the National Statistics Committee broadened its data coverage. The updated figures show GDP for 2024 rising from $115 bn to $121.4 bn, helped by the inclusion of an extra $6.81 bn of added value.
The changes were presented on November 27 during a meeting where President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the committee’s latest report. Officials also noted a continued reduction in the shadow economy, which has dropped from 50% in 2017 to 35% this year. Plans are in place to bring a further $6.64 bn of activity into the formal sector, which would reduce the level to 29%.
The committee said that 60 new digital integrations have cut the reporting burden on businesses by 27%. Statistical systems now receive information automatically from online tills as well as data on electricity and gas consumption, crop areas and yields.
The president stressed that the statistical system must fully reflect fast-growing sectors such as e-commerce, IT services, remote support and freelancing.
He also instructed officials to end manual data collection for the consumer price index and to adopt modern IT solutions and artificial intelligence.
The meeting also covered preparations for the national census, which will begin in January. It will be carried out electronically for the first time, with tablets used to gather information and a geographic information system overseeing the entire process. Plans for 9008 mahallas have already been approved and more than 60K census workers have been trained.
Kursiv also reports that Uzbekistan plans to expand its GDP to $200 bn by 2030.
