Disney’s Zootopia 2 topped the Thanksgiving box office with $156 mln domestically from 4,000 cinemas since November 26, including $96.8 mln over the weekend.

It is the second-biggest Thanksgiving opening ever behind Moana 2 and ahead of Frozen II. The sequel also earned $400 mln internationally, including a record $272 mln in China, bringing its global debut to $556 mln, the fourth-biggest opening weekend in history. Disney co-chairman Alan Bergman praised its worldwide appeal and the work of the filmmakers.

This year’s Thanksgiving weekend grossed roughly $293 mln across all films, ranking as the fourth-biggest holiday frame behind 2024, 2018 and 2014. Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian said the result was welcome after a turbulent post-summer season.

Zootopia 2, a buddy-cop animated comedy directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, benefitted from strong reviews and pent-up demand for family films. It follows a rabbit police officer and a fox con artist investigating a mysterious new reptilian resident, voiced by Ke Huy Quan.

Domestic grosses this year reached $7.5 bn, 1.3% ahead of 2024, leaving pressure on Zootopia 2, Wicked For Good and December’s Avatar: Fire and Ash to surpass $9 bn. Dergarabedian noted Thanksgiving sets the stage for a blockbuster December.

Kursiv also reports that Netflix and Sony have confirmed plans for a new animated KPop Demon Hunters movie, with the musical sequel scheduled for release in 2029.
