Environmental activist Greta Thunberg and members of Extinction Rebellion turned Venice’s Grand Canal bright green on Monday in a dramatic protest against what they say is global inaction on phasing out fossil fuels after the COP30 climate summit.
The group poured non-toxic fluorescein dye into the water and unfurled a «Stop Ecocide» banner from the Rialto Bridge. Dressed in red and staging a mock funeral procession, the activists said the action symbolized the failure of COP30 delegates in Brazil to agree on binding fossil-fuel limits.
The green-water stunt was part of coordinated demonstrations across 10 Italian cities.
«This is the future current climate policies are steering us toward,» an activist identified as Selene said in a statement.
Thunberg and 35 others were fined $178 each and banned from Venice for 48 hours.
Local officials condemned the action as disrespectful. But environmental groups note that Venice remains highly vulnerable to rising seas and frequent floods, with experts warning the city could face severe threats by the end of the century.
