New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani will take up residence in Gracie Mansion, the historic Manhattan home of most city mayors since World War II, leaving behind his rent-stabilised apartment in Astoria that drew attention during his campaign.

The 1799 mansion, overlooking the East River, features butter yellow paint, green shutters and white railings. Inside, the Federal-style home preserves much of its original charm, with five bedrooms and enhanced security for the mayor and his family. Some former residents have claimed the mansion is haunted, including Chirlane McCray, wife of former mayor Bill de Blasio, while outgoing Mayor Eric Adams has openly acknowledged ghost stories.

Mamdani, whose campaign centred on affordable housing, did not confirm immediately after his November victory that he would move to Gracie Mansion. In a statement on Monday, he said the decision was driven by family safety and the need to focus on delivering the housing agenda voters supported. He added:

«To Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City. While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.»

During the campaign, Mamdani linked his platform of rent freezes to his own housing situation. Critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, questioned his decision to occupy a rent-stabilised apartment while coming from a prominent family. Mamdani is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani.

Not every mayor has chosen Gracie Mansion as their home. Michael Bloomberg lived in his Upper East Side townhouse during his three terms, considering the mansion more suitable for public events and overseeing its renovation.

Mamdani’s Astoria apartment, where he paid about $2,300 (£1,725) per month, contrasts sharply with the mansion. Rent-stabilised units are seen as vital in New York, as the average one-bedroom now costs around $3,500 (£2,625) a month. Mamdani is expected to move into Gracie Mansion around his inauguration on January 1.
