Rob Reiner’s real-life love story with his wife Michele Singer famously reshaped the ending of When Harry Met Sally, turning the film into one of Hollywood’s most enduring romantic comedies. Decades later, that same partnership is now at the centre of a major police investigation in Los Angeles.

Reiner previously said the film was originally written with Harry and Sally parting ways. That changed after he met Michele, who was invited to the set by the film’s director of photography.

«Originally, Harry and Sally didn’t get together. But then I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works,» Reiner told the Guardian in 2018.

The couple married soon after and were together for 36 years.

On Sunday afternoon, emergency services were called to the Reiners’ home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Firefighters and police arrived at around 15:38 local time and found two people dead inside the house. Authorities later identified them as Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68. Police said the deaths are being investigated as homicides, though no cause of death has yet been released.

Their youngest daughter, Romy Reiner, is reported to have discovered the bodies.

Later the same evening, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested. Los Angeles police confirmed he has been booked on suspicion of murder and is being held on $4m bail. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or further details, and stressed that the investigation is ongoing. No court proceedings have yet taken place.

Nick Reiner is a screenwriter who previously worked with his father on the 2016 film Being Charlie. Police have declined to comment on the evidence involved or the circumstances leading to his arrest.

Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood, with actors and filmmakers remembering Reiner as a creative force whose work shaped generations of cinema. For many, When Harry Met Sally remains inseparable from the director’s own life, a film whose hopeful ending was born from a love story that lasted more than three decades.
