Bondi Beach Massacre Suspect Charged with 59 Offences

Australian authorities have charged 24-year-old Naveed Akram with 59 criminal offences, including 15 counts of murder, following the Bondi Beach terror attack that killed 15 people during a Hanukkah celebration. The mass shooting, described as one of the deadliest attacks on Australia’s Jewish community, also left at least 21 people injured.
The attack took place at Archer Park near Bondi Beach, where more than 1,000 people had gathered for a Jewish festival. Police say Naveed Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, opened fire on the crowd. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while Naveed Akram was hospitalised and placed in a coma. He was formally charged after regaining consciousness.

Among the victims were a ten-year-old girl, Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman and British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger. Authorities have praised the bravery of civilians who intervened during the attack, including Ahmed al Ahmed, who attempted to disarm one of the gunmen. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described him as an «Australian hero».
Investigators say the attack was inspired by Islamic State ideology. Police reportedly found homemade IS flags and improvised explosive devices linked to the suspect, and are examining overseas travel by the attackers as part of the ongoing investigation.
In response, the federal government and New South Wales authorities have announced plans to tighten gun control laws and expand police powers during terror-related incidents, as the country mourns the victims of the attack.
