Malaysia has called on Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to do «whatever is necessary» to ease the escalating conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, as Asean foreign ministers gathered in Kuala Lumpur for emergency talks.

Speaking at the special meeting on Monday, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said the renewed fighting along the Thai-Cambodian border had become a regional and global concern, stressing that Asean has a responsibility to help find a solution.

«Asean must do whatever is necessary to maintain regional peace and stability,» Mohamad said, calling for stronger trust-building measures and dialogue between the two sides despite deep differences.

Clashes earlier this month have displaced more than 500,000 people and left dozens dead, with both Bangkok and Phnom Penh accusing each other of initiating attacks. The latest violence is among the deadliest since a ceasefire brokered in July collapsed.

The meeting comes amid growing scrutiny of Asean’s ability to manage conflicts between its own members, as analysts warn that the bloc needs to move beyond statements and take coordinated action to prevent further escalation.

Kursiv Uzbekistan also reports that old soared past $4,400 per ounce for the first time on Monday, driven by growing expectations of US rate cuts and strong demand for safe-haven assets. Silver also joined the rally, reaching an all-time high.
