«Avatar: Fire and Ash» has surpassed $760 mln at the global box office after two weekends in cinemas.

During the busy Christmas period, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic earned $181.2 mln from 51 international markets and $245.2 mln worldwide. International takings fell just 25% from the opening weekend. To date, the Disney and 20th Century release has grossed $217 mln in North America and $542 mln overseas.

Outside the US and Canada, the strongest markets have been China with $99.6 mln, France with $54.4 mln, Germany with $43.1 mln and South Korea with $32.1 mln. The film is already the sixth highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year and is set to overtake titles such as «Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle» at $714 mln, «Jurassic World: Rebirth» at $869 mln and «A Minecraft Movie» at $958 mln in the coming weeks.

«Avatar 3» is expected to become the third film of 2025 to cross $1 bn globally, following Disney releases «Lilo & Stitch» at $1.03 bn and «Zootopia 2» at $1.3 bn and rising. No rival studio has released a billion-dollar film since 2023, underlining Disney’s dominance at the box office.

Industry observers are watching to see how far «Fire and Ash» can climb, as the franchise’s previous films earned $2.9 bn in 2009 and $2.3 bn in 2022. While the third instalment does not need to reach those heights to be profitable, its large budget requires a lengthy theatrical run. Historically, «Avatar» films have shown strong staying power in cinemas.
