The finale of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Stranger Things is set to become a major cinema event.

More than 1.1 mln people have registered to watch the final episode in theatres on New Year’s Eve, according to an Instagram post by co-creator Ross Duffer. He said 3,500 screenings across more than 620 cinemas have already sold out.

Duffer added that he and his brother Matt Duffer plan to attend several screenings.

«What a way to close out a ten-year journey — together,» he wrote, suggesting they may appear at showings in Los Angeles.

Season 5 was released in two volumes. The first, comprising four episodes, premiered on Thanksgiving Day, followed by three more episodes on Christmas Day. The final episode will be released in cinemas and on Netflix simultaneously on December 31.

The finale brings to an end one of Netflix’s most successful projects. The series recently surpassed 1.2 bn total views and has contributed more than $1.4 bn to the US economy, Variety reported. Season 4, released in 2023, remains Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series of all time.

Season 5 recorded Netflix’s biggest-ever opening week for an English-language series after the release of its first volume. It is expected to enter the platform’s all-time most popular list once its eligibility window opens in January.

Stranger Things is executive produced by the Duffer brothers through Upside Down Pictures, alongside Shawn Levy of 21 Laps Entertainment and Dan Cohen.

Kursiv also reports that Birmingham’s infamous Peaky Blinders gang is back in the official Netflix trailer for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
