China has banned the export of dual-use goods that could have military applications to Japan, citing national security concerns amid escalating tensions over Taiwan.

In a statement released Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the restrictions apply to products that can serve both civilian and military purposes and are intended for Japanese military users or other end-users that could enhance Japan’s military capabilities. Any individuals or organisations found violating the ban would face legal consequences, regardless of nationality.

The ministry did not specify which items are affected, but analysts note that certain technology exports, including drones and navigation systems, could potentially be adapted for military use. There was no immediate response from Japan.

Relations between China and Japan have deteriorated in recent months, largely over security concerns linked to Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its sovereign territory. Tensions intensified late last year after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested Japan’s military could become involved if China took action against Taiwan.

In December, Tokyo said Chinese military aircraft had locked radar onto Japanese fighter jets, despite maintaining a safe distance. Japan has since moved to significantly expand its defence budget, aiming to counter what it describes as growing regional threats.

Last week, China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan, warning against what it called separatist and external forces. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticised both Japan and pro-independence groups in Taiwan, accusing Tokyo of challenging China’s territorial sovereignty and the postwar international order.

During a meeting in Beijing on Monday with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Chinese President Xi Jinping also urged China and South Korea to work together to safeguard regional peace and stability in northeast Asia.
