The White House said President Donald Trump and his advisers are discussing a range of options to pursue Greenland, a semi‑autonomous territory of Denmark. The statement described acquiring the island as a «national security priority» and noted that using the US military is always an option available to the Commander-in-Chief.

The announcement followed a joint statement from European leaders supporting Denmark, emphasising that Greenland belongs to its people and that any decisions regarding its future must be made by Denmark and Greenland alone. They also said Arctic security should be pursued collectively through NATO allies and that the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty and territorial integrity, should be upheld.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed the statement and called for dialogue that respects the territory’s legal status and territorial integrity.

The issue gained attention after the US military operation in Venezuela to seize Nicolas Maduro, and following posts on social media by senior Trump aides suggesting Greenland could come under US control. Stephen Miller, a senior adviser, said the government considers Greenland part of US interests and indicated that force would not be opposed.

European leaders and Denmark have strongly rejected any US attempts to seize the territory, warning that an attack would threaten NATO’s unity.
