Disney has restarted work on its live-action adaptation of Tangled, casting Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim in the lead roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.

The project is based on the 2010 animated hit about a princess with magically long hair who escapes captivity with the help of a charming outlaw. The original film featured the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, earned more than $591 mln worldwide and led to a short film sequel and a Disney Channel television series.

Michael Gracey, best known for directing The Greatest Showman, is set to direct the live-action version. The screenplay was written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, with Kristin Burr producing and Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer. Disney has not yet announced a release date or additional production details.

Croft rose to prominence playing Rachel Roth, also known as Raven, in the DC series Titans. She also starred in the Netflix film True Spirit, portraying Australian sailor Jessica Watson.

Manheim gained recognition through Disney’s Zombies franchise and later finished second on season 27 of Dancing with the Stars. He is the son of actor Camryn Manheim.

The live-action Tangled was first reported to be in early development in December 2024 and was later paused in April following the modest box office performance of Snow White. The project now joins Disney’s growing slate of live-action adaptations of animated films, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and Lilo & Stitch.

Disney’s next live-action release, Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga‘aia, is scheduled to open in cinemas on July 10.
