Bob Weir, the legendary guitarist and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, has passed away at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer and lung issues, his family confirmed on Instagram. «There is no final curtain here, not really. Only the sense of someone setting off again,» the post read, highlighting Weir’s wish for his music and legacy to live on.

Weir’s career spanned more than six decades, beginning with the formation of the Grateful Dead in 1965. The band quickly became a defining force in San Francisco’s counterculture, blending psychedelic rock, folk, and Americana, and laying the foundations for the modern jam-band scene. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Even after the death of fellow co-founder Jerry Garcia in 1995 and the band’s official end, Weir remained active in spin-offs such as Dead & Company, performing residencies including at the Las Vegas Sphere in 2024 and 2025. According to his Instagram post, he continued performing while receiving treatment, giving «emotional, soulful, and full of light» shows that were «not farewells, but gifts.»

Fans and fellow musicians have paid tribute to Weir’s enduring influence. The Empire State Building lit up in tie-dye colours in his memory, while Slash, Don Felder, and others shared personal memories and messages of respect. His family thanked supporters for their «outpouring of love, support, and remembrance» while asking for privacy.
