Roblox’s newly introduced age-verification system is facing criticism just days after becoming mandatory, amid reports that it is misclassifying users and can be easily fooled.

The platform last week required all users to verify their age to access chat features, using either a selfie-based facial age estimate or, for those aged 13 and over, a government ID upload. The move followed mounting allegations that Roblox has been used by child predators, prompting lawsuits in several US states.

However, according to reports, the system has struggled to work as intended. Adults have been incorrectly classified as teenagers, while videos circulating online show children successfully bypassing the checks by altering their appearance or using images to appear older. In one case, a child reportedly gained adult status by drawing facial hair on his face.

Roblox has acknowledged problems, including cases where parents completed age checks on behalf of children, placing them in adult chat groups. The company says it is working on fixes, but developers and users have complained that the changes have sharply reduced engagement, with chat usage reportedly dropping significantly across the platform.
