BTS have officially announced their highly anticipated fifth studio album is titled “ARIRANG” and will be released on March 20 at 1 p.m. KST.
BigHit Music shared the news via social media on Thursday, with pre-orders scheduled to begin on January 16.
Cultural significance
The album title references a 600-year-old Korean folk song that holds a spot on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Often described as Korea’s unofficial national anthem, “Arirang” embodies “han”, a cultural concept representing a blend of sorrow, longing, resilience and hope.
Linguistic research suggests the term translates to “my beloved one”. The song historically served as a symbol of national identity and resistance during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
Return to roots
The choice of title appears intentional for the group’s first release following a four-year hiatus due to mandatory military service. It signals a return to their roots and suggests themes of reunion and homecoming as they reconnect with their global fanbase. BTS have consistently integrated Korean culture into their work, from traditional instruments to wearing hanbok in performances.
The album announcement follows Tuesday’s reveal of the group’s 2026-2027 world tour, which includes more than 70 dates across Asia, North America, South America, Australia and Europe.
”ARIRANG” will be available in multiple physical formats, including a “Living Legend” edition, a “Travel Tag CD Box Set” and a limited edition red vinyl. Target will also carry exclusive pre-order editions.
