Cate Blanchett is set to return to the world of Berk, joining the live-action sequel «How to Train Your Dragon 2» as Valka, a role she previously voiced in the animated trilogy.
The franchise centres on Hiccup, an awkward Viking teenager who forms an unlikely bond with an injured dragon named Toothless, challenging generations of hostility between Vikings and dragons. Set five years later, the sequel follows a now 20-year-old Hiccup and his friends as they encounter Valka, revealed to be his long-lost mother, and confront a villain seeking to dominate the world with a dragon army.
Blanchett will star alongside Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn. Dean DeBlois is writing and directing the sequel, having led the animated films to a combined $1.6 bn in global box office takings.
DeBlois also directed the 2025 live-action remake, which earned $646 mln worldwide and ranked as the fourth biggest Hollywood release of the year. Universal and DreamWorks have set a June 11, 2027, theatrical release for «How to Train Your Dragon 2,» opening a week after Sony’s animated «Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.»
Kursiv also reports that Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the «God of War» video game series.
