Netflix announced an expanded partnership with Japanese studio MAPPA, known for hits such as Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen. The deal will see the companies collaborate on new anime projects from story development through to merchandising, with Netflix streaming the resulting titles exclusively worldwide.

MAPPA’s president and CEO Manabu Otsuka said, «Japanese animation studios must proactively lead every stage, from understanding global audience needs and developing projects, to reaching viewers and expanding related businesses. MAPPA is committed to deepening our collaboration with Netflix, aiming for a long-term, win-win partnership.»

Netflix’s vice president of content for Japan Kaata Sakamoto added, «By combining MAPPA’s unique approach to anime production with Netflix’s global reach — and the courage to take risks, which is essential to creating compelling content — we hope to further expand the possibilities of anime. We are fully committed to delivering new works and excitement to fans around the world.»

Netflix said more than half of its members watch anime, and viewership has tripled over five years. Netflix has previously streamed MAPPA titles including Ranma 1/2 and Kakegurui Twin. Multiple new MAPPA projects are now in planning or production, and will premiere exclusively on Netflix.

Kursiv also reports that Netflix revised its takeover bid for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets, switching to an all-cash offer while keeping the overall value at $82.7 bn.
