U.S. President Donald Trump stepped back from threats to impose tariffs on Europe, Reuters reports. He said a deal was in sight to resolve the dispute over Greenland.

Speaking in Davos, Switzerland, Trump ruled out the use of force and said allies could agree on a plan that meets U.S. security needs and blocks Russian and Chinese influence.

«It’s a deal that everybody’s very happy with,» Trump said. «It’s a long-term deal. It’s the ultimate long-term deal.»

After meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said the issue of Greenland’s status within Denmark did not come up. Rutte said Trump was focused on protecting the Arctic from rival powers.

Trump had threatened tariffs on exports from eight European countries and criticised Denmark as «ungrateful». A NATO spokesperson said talks between Denmark, Greenland and the U.S. would continue, but no date was announced. Trump said he had asked Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take part in negotiations.

Denmark stressed that any resolution must respect its sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination. Trump said he would not impose the planned tariffs and posted on social media that the U.S. and NATO had formed a framework for a future deal.
