IndiGo cancelled flights to Tbilisi, Almaty, Tashkent and Baku until January 28, citing security concerns linked to the situation around Iran.
In a post on X, IndiGo said it is closely monitoring developments in the region and is proactively reviewing its flight operations, stressing that safety remains its top priority.
Following a detailed assessment, the airline said it will not operate services to and from Tbilisi in Georgia, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Tashkent in Uzbekistan and Baku in Azerbaijan on January 26, 27 and 28.
Flights to these destinations typically pass through Iranian airspace, which IndiGo is currently avoiding due to the evolving security situation. The airline operates A320neo aircraft on these routes, which lack the range and fuel capacity to fly significantly longer alternative paths.
Services between India and these cities usually take six to seven hours. On Sunday, IndiGo cancelled flights on the Delhi–Tbilisi and Mumbai–Almaty routes. The suspensions come amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States, fuelling concerns about a potential military escalation.
Air India also might cancel flights
Air India, meanwhile, is expected to reassess its use of Iranian airspace once operations normalise following disruptions caused by a snowstorm on the U.S. East Coast. The carrier had been using eastern portions of Iranian airspace, considered relatively safer, for some North America-bound flights.
Earlier, Air India stopped overflying Iran on its Europe routes after a January 16 advisory from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency warned of heightened risks to civil aviation in the region. The advisory cited the increased risk of misidentification by air defence systems and the potential use of surface-to-air missiles.
Since the advisory, Air India has routed its Europe-bound flights through Iraqi airspace. The airline is expected to decide whether to continue avoiding Iran once normal operations resume and the situation becomes clearer.
