Michael Schumacher is reportedly no longer confined to bed 12 years after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident.

Little has been made public about the 57-year-old’s condition since the crash in the French Alps in 2013, but a newspaper has reported that the seven-time Formula One world champion can now sit up in a wheelchair.

Schumacher remains under constant care from his wife Corinna and a team of medical professionals. However, his progress means he can now be wheeled around his properties in Majorca and near Lake Geneva.

He has not been seen in public since the accident, and there has been speculation that he can only communicate by blinking. Sources have denied that, saying he understands some of what is happening around him, though not everything.

Rumours that he would attend his daughter Gina-Maria’s wedding in 2024 proved to be unfounded.

Last year, three former family employees were convicted after threatening to publish hundreds of photos of Schumacher in his current state. Earlier this month, his daughter shared a rare family photo taken before the accident, posting it on Schumacher’s birthday with the caption: «The best forever. Happy birthday papa.»
