The Philippines has expressed alarm over increasingly heated public exchanges with China amid their long-running territorial dispute in the South China Sea, warning that the rhetoric could undermine efforts to manage tensions diplomatically.

Manila’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it made «firm representations» to the Chinese ambassador and embassy, conveying serious concern over the escalation of exchanges between officials from both sides. While cautioning against actions that could derail dialogue, the department reiterated its support for Philippine officials defending the country’s maritime claims.

The comments follow China’s move last week to summon Philippine Ambassador Jaime FlorCruz in protest over remarks by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela, a vocal critic of Beijing’s assertive actions in disputed waters.

China claims most of the South China Sea, a vital global trade route, despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that rejected its expansive claims. Beijing has refused to recognise the decision, which was brought by the Philippines.

Tensions between the two countries have intensified in recent years, with Manila publicly condemning Chinese coast guard actions, including the use of water cannons and dangerous maneuvers against Philippine vessels.

Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros also criticised Chinese diplomats, accusing them of overstepping diplomatic norms by publicly rebuking Filipino officials. The Chinese Embassy has rejected the accusations, saying it is responding to what it describes as attempts to misrepresent China’s position.

The exchange underscores the fragile state of relations between Beijing and Manila as disputes in the South China Sea continue to strain regional stability.
