Emma Heming Willis has revealed that her husband, actor Bruce Willis, is unaware he is living with frontotemporal dementia, describing the condition as both painful and, in some ways, a «blessing».

Speaking on the Conversations with Cam podcast on January 28, 2026, Emma explained that Willis, 70, has never fully understood his diagnosis, which was made public in 2023. She said this is due to anosognosia, a neurological condition that prevents a person from recognising their own illness.

«It’s where your brain can’t identify what is happening to it,» she said, adding that her husband believes his current state is his «normal».

Emma stressed that this is not denial, but a clinical symptom of the disease caused by damage to the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes.

Emma said the lack of awareness spares Willis the emotional burden of knowing his prognosis, allowing him to live without fear or distress. Despite the progression of the illness, she described him as still «very much present», though communication within the family has changed.

Rather than relying on conversation, Emma said their relationship now centres on emotional connection, presence and touch.

«It’s different, but it’s still very beautiful and very meaningful,» she said.

By speaking openly, Emma hopes to raise awareness of frontotemporal dementia and support other families facing similar challenges, showing that even as cognitive abilities fade, connection and love can endure.
