Nvidia, Amazon and Microsoft are in discussions to invest up to $60 bn in OpenAI, according to a January 28 report by The Information.

The report says Nvidia, already a key investor supplying chips that power OpenAI’s models, is considering an investment of up to $30 bn. Microsoft, a long-time partner of the company, is reportedly discussing a contribution of less than $10 bn. Amazon, which would join as a new investor, is said to be exploring an investment exceeding $10 bn and potentially surpassing $20 bn.

OpenAI is reportedly close to receiving formal investment commitments from the companies. Amazon and Microsoft declined to comment, while Nvidia and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters said it could not independently confirm the report.

The potential Amazon investment could hinge on parallel negotiations, including expanding OpenAI’s use of Amazon’s cloud infrastructure and a possible commercial agreement to distribute OpenAI products, including enterprise versions of ChatGPT, through Amazon.

The talks follow separate reports earlier this week that Japan’s SoftBank Group is considering investing up to an additional $30 bn in OpenAI. The company faces mounting expenses linked to developing and operating advanced AI systems while competition intensifies, particularly from Google.
