Netflix confirmed plans to release a new documentary on Michael Schumacher in 2026, focusing on the Formula 1 legend’s first championship-winning season.

Titled Schumacher ’94, the German-language feature will examine the seven-time world champion’s breakthrough year with Benetton, when he secured his first title. During the 1994 campaign, Schumacher won eight of 12 races, finished second twice and retired from the remaining events, sealing the championship in his debut season with the team.

Directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, the film will include appearances from Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, along with friends and colleagues who worked closely with the former Ferrari driver.

A Defining Season for Formula 1

According to Netflix, the 1994 season marked a major turning point in Formula 1 history, combining intense competition with controversy and tragedy, including the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna. The period also saw the rise of «Schumi Mania» as Schumacher rapidly became one of the sport’s biggest stars.

The documentary will explore both Schumacher’s fierce competitiveness on track and his more private personality away from racing, while also highlighting the early years of his relationship with Corinna Schumacher.

Part of Netflix’s Expanded German-Language Slate

The announcement came during a Netflix presentation in Berlin outlining upcoming German-language productions. Katja Hofem, Netflix’s vice president of content for German-speaking markets, said the company plans its most ambitious year yet in 2026, expanding the number and variety of local productions.

She added that the growth reflects years of collaboration with creative partners and a continued focus on bringing strong local stories to international audiences.

Kursiv also reports that Michael Schumacher is reportedly no longer confined to bed 12 years after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident.
