German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has urged European countries to act with greater confidence toward Washington, warning that fear-driven politics could weaken Europe’s decision-making.
Speaking to the RND media group, Pistorius said U.S. President Donald Trump relies on «uncertainty and fear» to achieve his goals, adding that «those who are afraid make the wrong decisions.» Europe, he argued, should not allow itself to be intimidated but instead focus on becoming «more sovereign and independent.»
Pistorius was responding to renewed pressure from Trump over Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory, and broader concerns about transatlantic relations. He stressed that the relationship is one of mutual dependence, noting that Europe is of major geostrategic and geoeconomic importance to the United States.
«If Europe were to fall into Russia’s sphere of influence,» Pistorius warned, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the U.S. would find itself strategically squeezed between Russia and China, a scenario he said would not serve American interests.
Meanwhile, separate figures published ahead of World Cancer Day by the Robert Koch Institute highlighted major domestic challenges in Germany, showing that nearly one in two people in the country will develop cancer during their lifetime.
