Uzbekistan and the World Bank have discussed attracting $55 mln in loan financing to support the construction of next-generation schools across the country, as part of broader efforts to modernise the national education system.

The talks took place in Tashkent between Yves Jeancleme, the World Bank’s Senior Education Specialist, and Otabek Fazilkarimov, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan. In addition to the proposed loan, the sides reviewed the allocation of a $5 mln grant and a separate $70 mln programme aimed at expanding and upgrading preschool education.

Discussions focused on improving coordination and efficiency across education projects, with an emphasis on harmonising funding mechanisms and optimising implementation. A key priority is the development of modern, next-generation school infrastructure that meets international standards and supports contemporary learning environments.

The parties also explored plans to construct energy-efficient educational and social facilities, integrating green technologies to reduce resource consumption and align with global best practices in sustainable development.

Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the World Bank continues to expand, with the current portfolio of joint projects now exceeding $14 bn, underscoring the scale of long-term collaboration between the country and the international lender.
