UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the United Nations could face a financial collapse as early as July. He outlined the risks in a letter to UN member states, stressing that the crisis threatens the organization’s core operations.

According to Guterres, the shortfall is already affecting peacekeeping missions and humanitarian programs. The main cause is the failure of the largest donor, the United States, to fully pay its assessed contributions, along with cuts in voluntary funding.

The Secretary-General presented a clear choice to member states. Either all countries meet their financial obligations in full and on time, or the UN must fundamentally revise its financial rules.

The UN’s financial stability is based on assessed contributions calculated according to each country’s ability to pay. The largest contributors are the United States (22%), China (up to 18.7%), followed by Japan, Germany, and others.

Under the UN Charter, countries with significant arrears risk losing their voting rights in the General Assembly. Guterres warned that without urgent action, the organization’s ability to operate effectively will be severely undermined.
