The acclaimed fantasy video game franchise Baldur’s Gate is being adapted into a television series, with Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s The Last of Us and Chernobyl, attached as showrunner.

The move follows the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which launched in 2023 to widespread critical praise, sold more than 20 mln copies and became the first game to sweep all five major Game of the Year awards.

The plot

The series will be set after the events of the latest game, drawing on the world’s established lore while introducing new storylines and characters grappling with the aftermath of what has unfolded. Given the game’s thousands of possible endings, the adaptation will not follow a single definitive outcome.

Unlike The Last of Us, the project will not directly involve Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, a detail that has prompted concern among some fans. The franchise is owned by Wizards of the Coast, which licensed the rights to Larian and can approve adaptations independently.

Why Mazin?

Mazin, a self-described Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast, said he decided to pursue the project after spending nearly 1,000 hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3. He said he hopes to honour the series with care and has indicated he may invite members of the game’s original cast to take part.

Larian founder Swen Vincke said the studio’s team was proud of its work on the game and expressed hope that the television series would be made with the same level of passion. He added that Mazin had contacted him to discuss the adaptation and hear the studio’s perspective.

Kursiv also reports that Teresa Palmer joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s television adaptation of «God of War.»
