An 11-year-old Uzbek citizen, Amira Aminova, died after being struck by a school bus in New York, Uzbekistan’s Consulate General in the city said.

The fatal crash occurred on February 5 in the Bath Beach area of Brooklyn. Police said the girl was crossing Bath Avenue at 23rd Avenue in a marked pedestrian crossing when a school bus turned into her path and hit her. Surveillance footage shows Amira had the right of way at the time of the collision.

She was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police said the 62-year-old bus driver did not stop immediately and later told officers he was not aware he had struck anyone. He was subsequently pulled over and questioned. The driver was issued traffic violations for failure to yield and failure to exercise due care. He was not charged with leaving the scene.

Authorities said the driver holds a valid licence and has no prior arrests.

Uzbek diplomats in New York expressed condolences to the girl’s mother and family, noting they are in constant contact with her and working with New York authorities on all necessary procedures. Diplomatic missions of Uzbekistan in the United States said they are ready to provide full assistance to the family.
