Team USA enjoyed a strong but dramatic second day at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, securing its first gold medals of the Games as competition intensified across northern Italy.
The United States, which is sending a record 232 athletes to the 2026 Winter Games, opened its gold medal tally thanks to skier Breezy Johnson, who captured gold in the women’s downhill. American figure skaters also topped the podium in the team event, led by a standout performance from Ilia Malinin, widely known as the «Quad God» for his technically demanding jumps.
After the opening ceremony on Friday, Team USA collected two medals in the first two days of competition, both gold, and is guaranteed at least a silver medal in mixed doubles curling, with a final against Sweden scheduled for Tuesday.
The early medal events took place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the co-host cities of the Games. The first gold of the Olympics overall was won by Swiss skier Franjo von Allmen in the men’s downhill.
While Team USA topped the medal table at the 2024 Summer Olympics, winter competition remains fierce. Norway dominated the medal count at the last Winter Games and continues to lead all nations historically in winter Olympic medals.
As events continue throughout the week, the medal standings are expected to shift rapidly, with more than 80 teams competing across disciplines at the Milano Cortina Games.
