Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid, who won bronze in the Winter Olympics biathlon on February 10, stunned fans by admitting he had cheated on his girlfriend and publicly asking for another chance.

«I realised this is the woman in my life, and I cannot live keeping it a secret from her. The only way to make things right is to be honest and hope she can still love me,» Laegreid told Norwegian newspaper VG.

He made the revelation to state broadcaster NRK shortly after the race, which was won by his compatriot Johan-Olav Botn, with France’s Eric Perrot finishing second.

Emotional Confession

The 28-year-old described meeting the woman six months ago and making the mistake three months ago.

«I told her a week ago. It has been the worst week of my life,» he said tearfully, without naming her. Comparing her to the Games’ top prize, he added: «I had a gold medal in my life. Sport has taken a different place these last few days, I wish I could share it with her.»

Laegreid said emotions were heightened after the race, which followed the death of teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken in December. Speaking to reporters, he admitted uncertainty over the timing of his interview:

«Maybe it was selfish. I’m not really here mentally.»

Later, Laegreid reiterated his plea for reconciliation.

«I’m not ready to give up. I regret it with all my heart. You have to admit when you hurt someone you love,» he told VG.

NRK biathlon expert and former teammate Johannes Thingnes Boe said he was shocked by the timing. He said that it came as a complete surprise. Boe also considers his teammate’s action to be wrong but they saw a repentant lad. Boe said the time and place were all wrong, noting Laegreid cannot hide his emotions and that the confession may have been unplanned.
