U.S. artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has secured $30bn in fresh funding, more than doubling its valuation to $380bn in one of the largest private fundraising rounds on record.

The company, best known for its Claude chatbot, was valued at $183bn as recently as September. The latest round was led by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and hedge fund Coatue Management, underscoring surging investor appetite for advanced AI models.

Anthropic said its annualised revenue has reached $14bn, growing more than tenfold in each of the past three years. A key driver has been Claude Code, its AI-powered coding tool launched in May 2025.

Despite the rapid expansion, the company acknowledged high operating costs linked to computing infrastructure and research talent. It forecasts reducing its cash burn to roughly one-third of revenue in 2026 and just 9% by 2027, targeting break-even in 2028.

Anthropic’s main rival, OpenAI, is reportedly seeking up to $100bn in funding at a valuation of about $830bn. Both companies are widely expected to consider initial public offerings in the second half of 2026.

The soaring valuations have unsettled some investors. Shares in major AI-linked firms including Alphabet, Meta and Nvidia have faced recent pressure amid concerns over heavy AI spending and broader market volatility.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has positioned itself as a safety-focused alternative in the AI race. Its earlier backers include Amazon, which has invested $8bn, and Google, which committed $2bn in 2023.

The fundraising comes as AI companies continue to attract unprecedented capital, even as markets weigh the long-term sustainability of their rapid growth.
