Jack Lang Faces Scrutiny Over Ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Former French culture minister Jack Lang has resigned as president of the Institut du monde arabe after newly released U.S. justice department files detailed his past connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The documents, part of a recent tranche of Epstein-related disclosures, show extensive correspondence between Lang and Epstein, including requests for private transport and expressions of gratitude for the financier’s «generosity.» In one 2017 message, Lang thanked Epstein and asked to borrow a chauffeur-driven car for a private event.
Lang, 86, has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal history at the time of their association, saying he met him roughly 15 years ago at a dinner hosted by filmmaker Woody Allen. He maintains that their relationship was limited to cultural and social exchanges.
The case has taken on added complexity due to the involvement of Lang’s daughter, film producer Caroline Lang, who co-founded a US Virgin Islands company with Epstein in 2016. French financial prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into suspected tax-fraud laundering involving Lang and his daughter. Both deny wrongdoing.
While the files reveal no new allegations of sexual misconduct in France beyond those linked to modelling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, who died in custody in 2022, they highlight how Epstein cultivated relationships within French political and cultural circles.
The affair has sparked debate in France about ethics, influence and the responsibilities of public figures. Critics say the revelations expose a culture of proximity between elites and wealthy benefactors, even after Epstein’s prior conviction in the United States.
Lang stepped down from his post following pressure from the Élysée Palace, stating he acted «in good faith.» Investigations are ongoing.
