Pakistan offspinner Usman Tariq has emerged as one of the most talked-about players at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with his unusual bowling action drawing both praise and controversy.

The 28-year-old made an immediate impact in Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets against the United States in his tournament debut. His distinctive delivery, marked by a prolonged pause at the crease and a sling-like release, has unsettled batters and fuelled debate over its legality.

Critics have questioned whether Tariq exceeds the International Cricket Council’s 15-degree elbow flex limit, the threshold used to judge illegal bowling actions, commonly referred to as «chucking.» He has previously been reported twice during the Pakistan Super League but was cleared on both occasions after biomechanical testing at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Tariq insists his action is natural. «My arm bends naturally. I have got this tested and cleared,» he said, explaining that his elbow movement is a biological condition.

The spinner’s deceptive rhythm has already troubled established international players, including Australia’s Cameron Green and South Africa’s Dewald Brevis. His rapid rise also includes a hat-trick against Zimbabwe and 11 wickets from his first four T20 internationals.

With spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka, Pakistan selectors have backed Tariq as a potential match-winner, particularly ahead of a high-profile clash with India.

Whether viewed as innovation or controversy, Tariq’s unique action has quickly become one of the defining talking points of this year’s T20 World Cup.
