Team GB secured its first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics as Matt Weston stormed to gold in the men’s skeleton with a dominant performance in Cortina.

The double world champion delivered a near-flawless display at the Cortina Sliding Centre, setting four consecutive track records across the four-run competition to finish well clear of the field.

Weston led from the opening day, establishing early control with record times in both initial heats. He carried a 0.3-second advantage into the final day and extended it further with another blistering run that left his rivals chasing.

Heading into the final heat with a comfortable cushion, the Brit sealed victory in style, ultimately winning by 0.88 seconds.

Germany’s Axel Jungk claimed silver, while compatriot Christopher Grotheer took bronze.

An emotional Weston said the victory meant «everything,» reflecting on the sacrifices behind his Olympic triumph. He thanked his family and supporters, noting the years of missed milestones that led to the moment.

The result caps a remarkable run of form for the Brit, who entered the Games as one of the favourites after dominating the World Cup season with five wins in seven races. Fellow Brit Marcus Wyatt, who also enjoyed success this season, finished ninth.

Weston’s gold provides an early boost for Team GB’s medal hopes in Milan-Cortina and underlines his status as one of the sport’s defining athletes.
