Director of the film Yellow Letters, Ilker Çatak, receives the Golden Bear on 21 February 2026.

German drama Yellow Letters (Gelbe Briefe) by director İlker Catak has won the Golden Bear, the top prize at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.

The film follows a lecturer and screenwriter who falls out of favour after supporting students protesting against war in the Middle East, forcing him and his wife to navigate political pressure and personal sacrifice.

The Grand Jury Prize went to Turkish thriller Salvation by Emin Alper, while Sandra Huller won Best Actress for her role in Rose. British actors Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay were recognised for supporting roles in Queen at Sea, and Grant Gee received Best Director for the jazz biopic Everybody Digs Bill Evans.

This year’s Berlinale was also marked by political debates, with discussions around censorship and the role of politics dominating press events and the closing ceremony. Festival organisers later stated that participants were not expected to address every political issue, emphasising the event’s artistic focus.
