Fresh protests have erupted across Iranian universities as students rallied over the weekend to honour demonstrators killed during last month’s crackdown, raising tensions amid fears of potential U.S. military intervention.

Students gathered on the first day of the new academic term at multiple campuses, including Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, where clashes reportedly broke out between protesters and pro-government groups. Demonstrators were heard chanting anti-government slogans, including calls against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and slogans linked to the «Woman, Life, Freedom» movement.

Protests were also reported at several major institutions, including the University of Tehran, Amirkabir University and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Some universities have reportedly imposed disciplinary measures, including banning certain students from campus access.

The unrest comes as the United States increases its military presence in the region and continues negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme. While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said recent talks with Washington had produced «encouraging signals,» officials on both sides acknowledge that significant differences remain.

The latest demonstrations follow a broader wave of anti-government protests that began earlier this year, initially driven by economic grievances before expanding into nationwide unrest. Rights groups estimate that thousands of people were killed during previous crackdowns, underscoring the volatile environment as domestic dissent and international tensions continue to intersect.
