Sony Pictures is preparing to relaunch its live-action Spider-Man universe with a new reboot and a fresh cast, the studio’s chief executive Tom Rothman has confirmed.
Speaking on Matthew Belloni’s The Town podcast, Rothman dismissed suggestions that Sony’s broader Spider-Man universe was finished. When asked whether the studio would return to those characters, he replied «Yes,» and confirmed the next iteration would be a full reset featuring new faces.
Rothman suggested that scaling back output could help revive interest. «Scarcity has value,» he said, arguing that audiences need time away from characters before enthusiasm can return.
Sony has controlled the theatrical rights to Spider-Man since 1999, producing Sam Raimi’s successful trilogy starring Tobey Maguire in the 2000s. After two reboot films led by Andrew Garfield, the studio partnered with Marvel Studios to introduce Tom Holland’s Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017.
While details of the reboot remain unclear, it appears unlikely that actors such as Tom Hardy, Dakota Johnson, Jared Leto or Aaron Taylor-Johnson will reprise their roles in the next phase.
Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man projects continue in the meantime. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is set for release on July 31 and will see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker encounter the Hulk and the Punisher.
