Uzbekistan and Canada have discussed expanding bilateral cooperation, with a focus on building a strategic partnership in the mining and geological sectors, officials said on Tuesday.
The talks took place during a meeting between Uzbekistan’s First Deputy Minister of Mining and Geology Feruza Khamidova and Canada’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan Christopher Duggan, according to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining and Geology.
During the discussions, Uzbek officials outlined ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the country’s mining sector. These included updates to the Law on Subsoil, the introduction of more transparent mechanisms for granting subsoil rights and the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards into industrial operations.
Both sides also explored broader areas of economic cooperation. Earlier talks between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov and Ambassador Duggan reviewed potential joint projects in green and renewable energy, as well as collaboration in IT, transport and logistics, agriculture, water management and metallurgy.
The discussions highlight Uzbekistan’s growing efforts to attract international partners as it reforms its resource sector and seeks foreign investment to support sustainable development and industrial modernisation.
