Uzbekistan has begun geological exploration operations in Afghanistan as part of a new cross-border resource cooperation initiative, officials said on Tuesday.

According to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining and Geology, the state-backed Uzbek Overseas Geology Company has started exploration work across several sites in northern Afghanistan, including the Muhammad-Jandagar, Shamar and Ahmadobod blocks.

The project will focus on identifying potential deposits of hydrocarbons as well as key metals such as iron and copper, the ministry said. Authorities view the initiative as part of broader efforts to expand Uzbekistan’s resource partnerships and strengthen regional economic ties.

An official launch ceremony was held in Balkh province, attended by local Afghan officials and company representatives. Uzbek Overseas Geology Company director general Khayitboy Omonov took part in the event alongside the province’s deputy governor for economic affairs.

The exploration programme follows a cooperation agreement signed between Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining and Geology and Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum. Officials from both sides said the project reflects a shared interest in developing the geological and mining sectors and deepening bilateral cooperation.

If successful, the initiative could mark a new phase in Uzbekistan’s regional energy and resource strategy, as the country seeks to diversify supply opportunities and expand its presence in neighbouring markets.
