Chelsea recorded a £355 mln loss during the 2024–25 season, the largest deficit ever reported by an English football club, according to newly released Uefa financial data.

The figure is more than double the next biggest loss in Europe, with French side Lyon reporting a £171 mln deficit. It also represents a sharp increase from Chelsea’s losses the previous season.

Uefa’s report suggests the club’s spending has outpaced revenue growth. Chelsea’s wage bill is estimated to be the sixth-highest in Europe at around £390 mln per year, while operational costs rank among the continent’s highest. The governing body also estimates the club assembled the most expensive squad in football history, costing more than £1.5 bn in transfer fees.

Despite heavy investment, Chelsea’s revenues have lagged behind rivals in key areas. Matchday income remains lower than top Premier League clubs due in part to Stamford Bridge’s relatively modest capacity. Commercial revenue also declined year-on-year, trailing far behind teams such as Manchester City, although broadcast income rose thanks to participation in international competitions.

The club’s financial position has been closely scrutinised since its acquisition by the BlueCo consortium in 2021. Ownership strategies have included long-term player contracts and asset sales to related entities to comply with financial regulations.

Elsewhere in Uefa’s rankings, Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo, appeared among Europe’s biggest loss-makers, reflecting increased spending and close transfer links with Chelsea in recent seasons.
