Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at Israel Following U.S.-Israeli Strikes

Iran’s armed forces have begun preparing to retaliate against Israel, according to state television. The Israeli military reported that ballistic missiles fired from Iran had been detected over the country, marking the first wave of Iranian retaliation for earlier U.S.-Israeli strikes, NYT reports.
Air-raid sirens are sounding across northern Israel and in Haifa, urging residents to enter fortified shelters.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel announced in a video statement that Israel and the United States had launched a «joint operation» against what he described as the «existential threat» posed by Iran. He added that the American-Israeli attack could «create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their destiny into their own hands.»
Earlier on the day of the strikes, senior officials from Arab states and European allies said the White House had not clarified the specific objectives of the attacks. President Trump’s video message made his intentions clear, calling for regime change.
«When we are finished, take over your government,» he said after the strikes began.
He claimed that he alone among U.S. presidents since the 1979 Islamic Revolution was willing to seize the moment.
In Tehran, residents reported receiving no government guidance at the start of the attacks. Sirens did not sound and state media offered no instructions on where to go or how to respond.
