U.S. President Donald Trump suggested a «friendly takeover» of Cuba, saying the Caribbean nation is in serious trouble and that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was handling the issue at a «very high level.»

Trump described Cuba as a failing country with no money, oil, or food, adding that the government had sought U.S. assistance.

«I can see that happening. Marco Rubio is dealing on it and at a very high level,» he said, calling the situation a «nation in deep trouble.»

The Cuban government has said it is not engaged in high-level talks with the United States but did not deny reports that U.S. officials may be in informal discussions with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, the grandson of former Cuban President Raul Castro.

Tensions escalated after Cuban forces killed four exiles and wounded six others who entered Cuban waters on a Florida-registered speedboat. The U.S. has blocked most oil shipments to the island, adding pressure on the Communist government. Trump noted that Cuban exiles in Miami could benefit from a potential U.S. takeover, calling it «something good … very positive» for those wishing to return to Cuba.
