Uzbekistan will build a museum in Tashkent to document the history and lives of the Koryo-in, ethnic Koreans forcibly relocated from Russia’s Primorsky region to Central Asia in 1937, Yonhap reports.

The project marks the 90th anniversary of the forced migration and aims for completion by the end of 2027. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Overseas Koreans announced on 27 February that it had appointed advisory committee members for the Koryo-in History Museum and held their first meeting at the Incheon office.

Advisory members include researchers, architects and museum directors from numerous universities across South Korea.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Overseas Koreans, the South Korean Embassy in Uzbekistan, and the Uzbekistan Koryo Culture Association also joined the meeting.

The committee will be involved in all stages of the museum project, including design, artefact research and collection, and exhibition planning. During the meeting, members discussed project progress, future plans, basic design concepts, and plans for artefact surveys. They also offered advice to ensure the museum’s successful establishment.

Before the meeting, Ministry head Kim Kyung-hyup emphasised the importance of the museum.

He said, «The Koryo-in preserved our national culture despite the hardships of forced migration and participated in the independence movement. The museum should instil pride in the Koryo-in community and serve as a space for all our citizens to learn a shared history.»

The ministry plans to complete the museum design in the first half of 2026 and begin construction in the second half.
