Aston Martin Might Skip Australian Grand Prix Due to Underdeveloped Car

Aston Martin Racing could face a limited outing in Melbourne after the Honda RA626H power unit proved unreliabl, Motorsport reports. The six-cylinder engine has caused battery failures during testing, forcing the squad to spend more time in the garage than on track.
Technical director Adrian Newey must reconsider development plans for the AMR26, while former Mercedes executive Andy Cowell has flown to Japan to lend his experience to Honda engineers. The power unit’s shortcomings have left Aston Martin in a difficult position, putting months of preparation and ambitious plans at risk.
Lawrence Stroll’s investment in the team has already built a state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and attracted a top-tier staff. The goal was to establish a championship-contending outfit and attract a leading driver by 2027, but current engine issues threaten to derail that timeline.
Honda arrived in Melbourne underprepared, with parts shortages and repeated test failures even prompting discussions about skipping the Australian Grand Prix. Such a move would have caused significant logistical and contractual problems under the Concorde Agreement governing F1 team obligations.
Cowell’s expertise from Mercedes’ hybrid era is seen as a key resource to restore reliability. For now, the priority is stabilising the engine before performance upgrades can be considered. Newey highlighted the severity of the problem, noting the internal combustion engine lacks sufficient power to recharge the battery, suggesting both design limitations and reliability concerns.
Until Honda resolves the issues, evaluating the AMR26’s true potential and planning development will remain impossible, while competitors continue to progress rapidly.
